Announcing the International Core War Society!
Core War is a "programmer's game," where human competitors write
programs which compete against one another in a simulated computer.
These programs are similar in a way to the "icebreakers" of science
fiction writer William Gibson's milieu. Core War was first popularized
by A.K. Dewdney's "Computer Recreations" articles in Scientific American
starting in 1984, although it had existed in different forms since the
1970s. Core War simulators exist for virtually every computing
platform, and hundreds of human competitors have submitted Core War
fighter programs to the annual Core War tournaments held since 1986.
The International Core War Society, or ICWS, has served the community of
Core War programmers since 1986. Today, as the new Director of the
ICWS, I invite you to become a member. The primary activities of the
ICWS are:
-- Publication of a quarterly newsletter, The Core War Newsletter (or
TCWN);
-- An annual tournament, featuring the best fighter programs from
around the world;
-- The development of a new Core War Standard (the current standard was
instituted in 1988); and
-- The promotion of Core War for research and recreational purposes,
both in the United States and at nine ICWS Branch Sections in other
countries and on the international computer network.
Membership in the ICWS will entitle you to:
-- Four issues of our quarterly Newsletter;
-- One entry in the annual tournament; and
-- One copy of ICWS '88, the standard for the language in which Core
War fighter programs are written.
Membership currently costs US$15 per year. Overseas members are welcome
at the same rate, but checks must be drawn on US branches of US banks.
Postal money orders and cash will also be accepted. Make checks out to
"Jon Newman" (_not_ to the ICWS until further financial arrangements are
complete) and send them to:

The best way to contact me is via electronic mail, at
JONN@MICROSOFT.COM. (Microsoft sometimes has mailer trouble; if your
electronic mail is not answered within a week, please resubmit your
mail.) Questions can also be sent to the above postal address. If you
can send a stamped self-addressed envelope with postal mail, this will
help me answer as soon as possible. Please remember that the Director
of the ICWS gets quite a lot of mail; this little courtesy will be very
helpful.
Finally, please note that the Microsoft has no connection with the ICWS.
In fact, they don't know about any of this, and they probably wouldn't
approve. Microsoft takes no responsibility or liability for any
activities of the ICWS. (Microsoft treats me well, I try not to get it
in trouble.)
